MBBS vs BDS vs Pharm-D vs DPT vs BS Nursing: What to Choose After FSc Pre-Medical
FSc pre-medical opens many doors, and picking one is the hard part. MBBS and BDS get most of the attention, but Pharm-D, DPT and BS Nursing are respected degrees with their own entry tests, regulators and career paths.
This guide compares the five side by side, then helps you decide using what Pakistani universities and education guides report about duration, admission and scope. It also answers the questions students search for most: which field is best after FSc pre-medical in Pakistan, whether MDCAT is needed for Pharm-D, what Pharm-D and D Pharmacy mean, and which other medical fields in Pakistan are worth a look.
Which Field Is Best After FSc Pre-Medical? The Five Paths at a Glance
There is no single best field after FSc. Parhlai's guide boils the decision down to three things: your aggregate and test performance, your genuine interest in the work, and your career and income goals. The table shows how the five best-known options differ on the facts that decide eligibility and timeline.
| Degree | Duration | Entry test | Regulator | Typical careers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MBBS | 5 years + 1 year house job | MDCAT (mandatory) | PM&DC | General practitioner, specialist, academia, public health, research |
| BDS | 4 years + 1 year house job | MDCAT (same as MBBS) | PM&DC | Dentist, dental specialist, own clinic |
| Pharm-D | 5 years | University test or NTS, not MDCAT | Pharmacy Council of Pakistan and HEC | Pharmacist, pharma industry, hospital pharmacy, regulatory affairs, clinical research |
| DPT | About 5 years | Its own entry test | Varies (allied health) | Hospitals, rehabilitation centres, sports medicine, physio clinics |
| BS Nursing | 4 years | Its own entry test | Pakistan Nursing Council | Hospital wards, clinics, community health, overseas nursing |
List of fields after FSc pre-medical
The short list of fields after FSc pre-medical, which most guides call the best fields in Pakistan after FSc, is MBBS, BDS, Pharm-D, DPT and BS Nursing, followed by DVM, medical lab technology, radiology, occupational therapy and public health. The best field after FSc in Pakistan for you will come from that list, once you check your marks against each path.
MBBS and BDS are the only two paths in this list that go through MDCAT. Pharm-D, DPT and BS Nursing each use their own university or entry tests, so a low MDCAT score does not close those doors. Details for each path follow.
MBBS vs BDS: Two Routes Through MDCAT
MBBS and BDS are the two clinical medical degrees in Pakistan, and they share the same MDCAT and merit system. BDS typically has lower merit cutoffs at public colleges, according to Parhlai's guide. The difference is in what you study and how your career runs after graduation.
MBBS: scope and fields
MBBS is the most competitive medical field in Pakistan. It takes five years of study followed by a one-year house job. If you want to specialise, ACPS notes you should add another four to five years of postgraduate training (FCPS or MD), which can put you in your early thirties by the time you are a consultant.
The usual MBBS fields after graduation are general practice, specialist medicine (surgery, paediatrics and others), academia, public health and research. Parhlai reports that specialists earn the highest salaries in healthcare, with figures of Rs 200,000 to 500,000+ per month after FCPS or MS, while general practitioners earn less but have wide employment options in the public and private sectors. Treat salary figures as indicative, since pay depends on city, employer and experience.
Cost matters too. Public medical colleges are affordable but need exceptional merit, while ACPS says private MBBS often costs one to two crore rupees for the full degree. In our College Matcher data from the official UHS and KMU 2025-26 lists, closing merit at the public MBBS colleges listed ranged from about 93.4% to 94.9%.
BDS scope in Pakistan
BDS takes four years plus a one-year house job. Graduates work as dentists in hospitals and clinics, specialise (for example through FCPS, or in orthodontics and oral surgery), or open their own practice. Parhlai describes a strong private-practice model, particularly in cities, and reports that running your own clinic can bring in Rs 80,000 to 200,000+ per month. ACPS adds that dental careers also offer international migration opportunities.
MBBS vs BDS side by side
| Factor | MBBS | BDS |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | The whole human body: general practice and specialities | Oral and dental health |
| Duration | 5 years + 1 year house job | 4 years + 1 year house job |
| Entry test | MDCAT | MDCAT (same test) |
| Minimum MDCAT | 55% (99 out of 180) | 50% (90 out of 180) |
| Public college merit | Most competitive | Typically lower cutoffs than MBBS |
| After the degree | Practise, or specialise (FCPS / MD) for 4 to 5 more years | Practise, specialise, or run your own clinic |
Brilliant Pala's MBBS vs BDS comparison, written for India, frames the choice in a similar way: MBBS offers broader scope and higher long-term earnings, while BDS offers a faster start and better work-life balance. Its numbers do not apply to Pakistan, so use it only as general framing. If you are leaning towards either degree, calculate where you stand first with our MDCAT aggregate calculator.
Pharm-D (D Pharmacy): Course Details, Scope and What Comes After
What is a PharmD degree? Meaning and full form
Pharm D stands for Doctor of Pharmacy. It is a five-year professional degree that you can start after FSc or A-Levels (or an equivalent 12 years of education). UBAS, a Lahore university, asks for 60% marks in the earlier qualification, and says the full journey is five years of study plus a one-year internship. So what is D Pharma, and what does D Pharmacy mean? In everyday use, D Pharmacy (also typed as dpharmacy, or D Pharma) can mean either degree: many students use it for Pharm-D, but D-Pharm technically means the diploma. The D Pharm full form is Diploma in Pharmacy, while Pharm D stands for Doctor of Pharmacy, so always check the full form before you apply.
Is MDCAT necessary for D Pharmacy (Pharm-D)? No. Pharm-D does not use MDCAT. Universities run their own test or accept an NTS test, as Parhlai explains. Our NTS guide explains how NAT and GAT work.

D Pharmacy course details in Pakistan: D-Pharm vs Pharm-D
These are the D Pharm course details most students need. D-Pharm courses (also searched as dpharm courses) are short technical diplomas, while the Pharm-D is the full professional degree.
| D-Pharm | Pharm-D | |
|---|---|---|
| Full form | Diploma in Pharmacy | Doctor of Pharmacy |
| Starts after | Matric (SSC) | FSc, A-Levels or equivalent |
| Length | Two-year technical diploma | 5 years, plus a 1-year internship (UBAS) |
| Typical role | Assistant pharmacist working under a pharmacist: inventory, dispensing | Professional pharmacist, once registered |
| Pay and growth | Significantly lower, according to UBAS | Higher earning and growth potential |
If you already hold a D-Pharm and want to become a full pharmacist, UBAS says you can enrol in Pharm-D afterwards.
Scope of Pharm-D in Pakistan
The Pharm D scope in Pakistan, sometimes searched as the scope of D Pharmacy in Pakistan or D Pharmacy scope in Pakistan, covers hospitals, the pharmaceutical industry, clinical research, academia, regulatory affairs and running your own pharmacy once you are registered and licensed. ACPS lists roles such as production manager, quality control specialist, drug safety officer, medical affairs executive and sales and marketing in pharmaceutical companies, and notes that hospitals are setting up dedicated clinical pharmacy departments.
Parhlai reports industry salaries of roughly Rs 60,000 to 150,000 per month, with higher pay at multinational companies. Abroad, ACPS and UBAS mention the Gulf, the UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia and the US, but you must hold the local pharmacist licence in the country you choose. In Pakistan, you register as a pharmacist with your provincial pharmacy council.
ACPS suggests Pharm-D suits students who enjoy chemistry, are interested in how medicines work, want a healthcare career without direct patient care responsibilities, or like the business and research side of pharmaceuticals.
Can Pharm-D graduates use "Dr"?
Can PharmD use Dr? UBAS states that Pharm-D graduates, as professional pharmacists, may use the title Dr. with their name.
What to do after Pharm-D or after D Pharmacy
After Pharm-D, which course is best? There is no single best course; it depends on whether you want practice, industry, research or teaching.
- After Pharm-D: register with your provincial pharmacy council and start in a hospital, industry, regulatory or research role. For further study, UBAS offers M.Phil and PhD programmes in Pharmacy Practice.
- After D-Pharm: start work as an assistant pharmacist, or continue to Pharm-D if you want the full professional qualification.
DPT and BS Nursing: Rehabilitation and Patient Care
These two degrees suit students who want a healthcare career without taking the MDCAT route. Both are allied health programs with their own entry tests, and both are covered by hospitals, clinics and overseas employers.
DPT: scope and career
KIPS Prep says DPT leads straight into rehabilitation and physical care. Graduates join hospitals, physio clinics, or work with sports teams, and demand grows as health awareness rises. ACPS describes physiotherapy as the field where you directly help patients recover their mobility and quality of life, and UBAS notes the scope is not limited to Pakistan.
BS Nursing: scope and career
A BSN prepares you for hospital wards, clinics and community health centres. ACPS reports strong global demand: the UK's NHS recruits internationally trained nurses, Gulf countries offer comprehensive packages, and Pakistani nurses who clear the NCLEX can work in the United States. Within Pakistan, specialised roles in critical care, operating rooms, oncology and cardiac care are described as particularly well paid.
ACPS suggests nursing suits students who genuinely care about people, can handle the emotional and physical demands of patient care, want a shorter path than MBBS, and are open to working abroad. It also notes that nursing is no longer a female-only profession in Pakistan.
| DPT | BS Nursing | |
|---|---|---|
| Core work | Restoring movement and function | Direct patient care |
| Duration | About 5 years (Parhlai) | 4 years |
| Where you work | Hospitals, physio clinics, sports teams, rehabilitation centres | Wards, clinics, community health, overseas hospitals |
| Entry | Own entry test | Own entry test |
Top 10 Medical Fields in Pakistan After FSc
The medical field in Pakistan has two tiers, as Parhlai puts it: clinical medicine (MBBS and BDS) and allied health and other programs with their own regulators and tests. Careers in the medical field go well beyond doctor and dentist, and this medical fields list covers the main medical fields after FSc and the medical degrees in Pakistan that students most often consider. Beyond the five paths above, these are the fields after FSc pre-medical (the after FSc pre medical fields) that most guides include when they rank the best medical fields in Pakistan.
| # | Field | Duration | What it involves |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | MBBS | 5 + 1 years | Clinical medicine and specialisation |
| 2 | BDS | 4 + 1 years | Dentistry and private dental practice |
| 3 | Pharm-D | 5 years | Pharmacy, industry, hospital and regulatory roles |
| 4 | DPT / physiotherapy | About 5 years | Rehabilitation and sports medicine |
| 5 | BS Nursing | 4 years | Patient care in Pakistan and overseas |
| 6 | DVM (veterinary medicine) | 5 years | Livestock, poultry, food safety and pet care; not MDCAT |
| 7 | BS Medical Lab Technology | 4 years | Diagnostics in labs and hospitals |
| 8 | BS Radiology / Medical Imaging | 4 years | CT, MRI and X-ray in diagnostic hospitals |
| 9 | BS Occupational Therapy | 4 years | Rehabilitation and special education settings |
| 10 | Public health | Bachelor's, then master's | Disease prevention and community health |
Durations for fields 6 to 9 come from Parhlai's guide. Common positions in the medical field, from clinical to allied roles, include general practitioner, specialist, dentist, pharmacist, clinical pharmacist, physiotherapist, nurse, lab technologist, radiographer and veterinarian. So which is the best field in medical? The one that matches your marks, interest and goals, as the decision guide below explains.
Public health scope in Pakistan
Public health is not about treating one patient but whole communities: awareness drives, disease prevention and research. ACPS says these careers usually need a bachelor's degree followed by a specialised master's, and suit students with strong analytical and leadership skills. Demand has grown since the COVID era, ACPS adds.
Other allied fields, including the BEMS degree
KIPS Prep notes that medicine is not limited to MBBS and BDS: nutrition, speech therapy and emergency medicine are growing fields with steady jobs in clinics and hospitals. On BEMS degree scope in Pakistan, emergency medicine programs such as BEMS (Bachelor of Emergency Medical Services) fall in this group, but program quality and recognition vary, so check each university's accreditation, entry test and curriculum before you apply. ACPS also lists operation theatre technology, anesthesia technology and dialysis technology among allied programs, ranging from two-year diplomas to four-year bachelor's degrees.
Biology fields after FSc beyond medicine
Not all FSc fields are clinical. If clinical work does not appeal to you, biological sciences are another route. UBAS, for example, offers BS Biotechnology, Forensic Science and Human Genetics and Molecular Biology, and KIPS Prep mentions clinical psychology, which many pre-medical students overlook.
How to Choose: A Practical Guide for Pakistani Students
Start with an honest look at five things, the same factors ACPS recommends weighing: your academic performance and test ability, the money your family can realistically commit, your personality and interests, your life goals and timeline, and the support around you. Social prestige and family pressure alone are the most common reasons students regret a choice.
Years of study before you can practise
MBBS specialisation (FCPS or MD) adds four to five more years. The Pharm-D internship year is from UBAS; Parhlai lists the degree itself at five years. DPT duration is from Parhlai.
Choose the path that fits you
Check your numbers before you decide
- Calculate your aggregate. MDCAT merit is 10% Matric, 40% FSc and 50% MDCAT. Enter your marks in our MDCAT aggregate calculator.
- Check the minimums. MBBS needs at least 55% in MDCAT, and BDS at least 50%. KMU's merit list notes also require at least 60% in HSSC for MBBS.
- Compare with last year's closing merit. Public MBBS colleges in Punjab and KPK closed between about 93.4% and 94.9% in 2025-26, so competitive public MBBS needs a very high aggregate.
- Look at the alternatives early. Pharm-D, DPT and BS Nursing have their own entry tests, so read each university's admission notice and apply in parallel instead of waiting for MDCAT results.

Final Thoughts
MBBS, BDS, Pharm-D, DPT and BS Nursing are all real, in-demand paths, and none of them is the "backup" option. MBBS and BDS reward very high merit and a long road, Pharm-D suits students drawn to medicines and industry, DPT suits rehabilitation, and BS Nursing offers a shorter route with global demand.
Work out your aggregate first, read each university's admission notice, talk to people who work in the fields you are considering, and then choose the path you can commit to. Remember that durations, entry tests and fees change, so confirm the latest details with the university and the relevant regulator before you apply.
