Merit Formula by Program Type
Note: Most BS programs list an academic record of 75% and an entry test of 25%. The calculator covers the first three rows. B.Arch. splits its merit into academic record 50%, PU entry test 10%, a departmental test 20% and an interview 20%. MS and M.Phil. merit is points-based: academic qualifications 40, publications 5, experience 5, written test 40 and interview 10.
Entry test exemptions: Foreign applicants, children of overseas Pakistanis, reserved-seat nominees from Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK, Sindh, Balochistan and ex-FATA, and blind candidates are exempt from the entry test. For engineering, you need at least 60% in FSc Pre-Engineering, Pre-Medical, ICS, DAE or A-Level, plus a test such as ECAT, PU-E, PU-M, PU-CSP or the NUST engineering test.
How the PU Aggregate Is Calculated (2026-27)
The University of the Punjab calculates merit from the Basic Criteria in its Admission Regulations. For most BS programs your academic record is worth 75% and the PU entry test 25%. Matric counts as only one-fourth of your marks inside the academic part, so your FSc result carries most of the weight.
BS (1st Semester) Formula
Academic % = (¼ Matric + FSc + Additional Marks) ÷ (¼ Matric Total + FSc Total) × 100
Aggregate = (Academic % × 0.75) + (Entry Test % × 0.25)
BSc Engineering Formula
Aggregate = (FSc % × 0.67) + (Entry Test % × 0.33)
BS 5th Semester Formula
Aggregate = (¼ Matric + ⅕ FSc + BA/BSc/ADP + Additional Marks) ÷ (¼ Matric Total + ⅕ FSc Total + BA/BSc/ADP Total) × 100
Worked Example (BS)
Matric 950/1100, FSc 900/1100, entry test 70/100 → Academic = (237.5 + 900) ÷ (275 + 1100) × 100 = 82.73% → (82.73 × 0.75) + (70 × 0.25) = 62.05 + 17.50 = 79.55% aggregate. These numbers are only an illustration.
Why the Matric Weight Is About 15%
Because Matric marks count one-fourth, a Matric total of 1100 adds 275 to the denominator against 1100 for FSc. Matric therefore makes up 20% of the academic record, which is about 15% of the whole aggregate. FSc makes up about 60% and the entry test 25%. Your own figures vary slightly if your Matric and FSc totals differ.
Additional Marks
Hafiz-e-Quran candidates get 20 marks added to their earned marks, and departments list other additional marks, such as for a relevant elective subject. In the example above, adding 20 Hafiz-e-Quran marks lifts the academic record to 84.18% and the aggregate to 80.64%. You must attach an authenticated certificate to your application, and the department can interview you on it.
Late-Year Deduction
PU deducts 2 marks from your academic percentage for each late year, up to a maximum of five. You also submit an affidavit that you did not take admission anywhere in the gap between passing and applying. The deduction does not apply to MS, M.Phil. or Ph.D.
Provisional Applicants
If you are waiting for your Intermediate Part-II result, PU makes provisional admission on your Part-I result. The merit formula then uses your Part-I obtained and total marks. If you fail Part-II, the provisional admission is cancelled.
A-Level Students
An IBCC equivalence certificate for your O and A Levels is mandatory. Enter the equivalent marks and totals from that certificate in the Matric and FSc fields.
How PU Merit Lists Work
Once your PU aggregate is calculated, your department compares it with every other applicant for the same program and shift. The admission is then made on merit, apart from the reserved seats.
Merit Lists Are Published by Program
PU uploads merit lists for each subject and program on its official website. It does not send call letters or make phone calls, so check the university and departmental websites often.
Apply Separately for Each Seat Type
You apply separately for morning, evening, replica, self-supporting and reserved-quota seats in each discipline. An application in one category is not converted to another.
Merit Seats and Reserved Seats
Merit lists have a general merit list, candidates selected on merit and candidates selected on reserved seats. Reserved categories include sports, co-curricular activities, PU teachers' and employees' children, and nominees from Balochistan, Sindh, AJK, Gilgit-Baltistan and ex-FATA. Unfilled reserved seats can move to merit with the Vice-Chancellor's approval.
How Ties Are Decided
When candidates have equal merit, PU looks at marks in the next qualification down, then Matric marks, and then gives preference to the older applicant.
Where to Apply
Undergraduate online forms are available at admissions.pu.edu.pk. Gujranwala, Jhelum and Pothohar campuses follow the same schedules and regulations as the Main Campus.
Note: We do not publish closing merit figures for PU, PUCIT or any other department because we could not verify official numbers. Any closing-aggregate figure you find online is an estimate. Use your calculated aggregate as a general guide and check your department's published merit list.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the PU aggregate formula?
For most BS programs, PU merit is an academic record worth 75% plus the PU entry test worth 25%. The academic record counts Matric marks at one-fourth: (¼ Matric + FSc + additional marks) ÷ (¼ Matric total + FSc total). With equal totals this is about 15% Matric, 60% FSc and 25% test.
How do I calculate my PU merit?
Choose your program in the calculator and enter your marks obtained and total marks for each result. It applies the Basic Criteria from PU's 2026-27 Admission Regulations, then shows your aggregate and a breakdown.
Why does Matric count only a quarter in the PU formula?
PU's Basic Criteria add only one-fourth of your Matric marks to your FSc marks, and one-fourth of the Matric total to the FSc total. That is why FSc decides most of your academic record.
What is the PU merit formula for engineering?
Engineering programs at PU list the intermediate (FSc, DAE, ICS or A-Level) at 67% and the entry test at 33%. You need at least 60% in your intermediate, and a test such as ECAT, PU-E, PU-M, PU-CSP or the NUST engineering test.
How is BS 5th Semester merit calculated?
Most BS 5th Semester programs use an academic record of 100%. The formula adds one-fourth of Matric, one-fifth of FA/FSc and your BA/BSc/ADP marks, then divides by the matching total. Select BS 5th Semester in the calculator.
Can I use this PU calculator for BBA, BBIT or IBA?
The regulations list an academic record of 75% and an entry test of 25% for programs such as BBA at the Institute of Business Administration, BBIT and BS Commerce at Hailey College, so the BS option applies. Some programs differ. B.Arch. and BFA programs have their own splits, so check your department's entry in the regulations.
Does this work for PUCIT, LLB, Pharm-D or MSc?
We could not confirm the criteria for those programs, so use the department's own entry in the PU Admission Regulations. Pharm-D needs F.Sc. Pre-Medical with 60% marks. MS and M.Phil. merit is points-based: academic 40, publications 5, experience 5, written test 40 and interview 10.
Is the entry test mandatory for PU BS admission?
Yes. The entry test is mandatory for BS programs after Intermediate, for merit and reserved seats. Foreign applicants, children of overseas Pakistanis, reserved-seat nominees from Gilgit-Baltistan, AJK, Sindh, Balochistan and ex-FATA, and blind candidates are exempt.
How many marks does a Hafiz-e-Quran get at PU?
Hafiz-e-Quran candidates get 20 additional marks. You must attach an authenticated certificate to your application, and the department can interview you about it. The calculator applies these marks to the BS options.
How does the late-year deduction work at PU?
PU deducts 2 marks from your academic percentage for each late year, up to a maximum of five years. You also submit an affidavit that you did not take admission elsewhere between passing and applying.
Can I apply to PU before my Part-II result?
Yes. PU makes provisional BS admission on your Intermediate Part-I result, and your merit is calculated on Part-I marks. If you fail Part-II, the provisional admission is cancelled.
How do I apply for PU admission and check the merit list?
Fill in the undergraduate form online at admissions.pu.edu.pk. PU uploads merit lists for each program on its official website and does not send call letters, so check the university and department pages often.
What was the closing merit of PU last year?
We do not publish closing merit because we could not verify official figures. Closing merit changes every year and differs by program and shift. Compare your aggregate with your department's published merit list.
Can I use this for older sessions like 2018 or 2019?
No. The calculator follows the 2026-27 Admission Regulations. Earlier sessions used the regulations of their year, so check that year's booklet.
Is this a PU GPA or CGPA calculator?
No. This page calculates your admission aggregate only. For semester GPA or CGPA, use a dedicated GPA calculator.
