UET vs NUST vs FAST vs GIKI: How to Choose an Engineering University

If you are comparing UET, NUST, FAST and GIKI, you have probably already read lists ranking them one to four. Rankings help, but they skip the question that decides your admission: how does each university turn your marks into a merit score? The four formulas reward very different students.

This guide compares the four on what matters when you are choosing an engineering university in Pakistan: entry tests, merit formulas, campuses, programs and costs. It uses the formulas from our own calculators, so you can see in numbers whether your Matric, FSc or test score carries you furthest at each university.

UET vs NUST vs FAST vs GIKI at a Glance

These four are the most common shortlist for engineering and computing students, but they are very different institutions. UET and NUST are public universities, FAST and GIKI are private, and each runs its own entry test (FAST also accepts two alternatives). The table below shows the facts that decide where you can apply.

Watch out for outdated numbers. Some third-party comparison pages print NUST's merit weights as 50% NET, 40% HSSC and 10% Matric, or GIKI's as 85% test, 10% HSSC and 5% SSC. Those do not match the formulas used in our calculators (NUST 10/15/75 and GIKI 85/15), so always confirm the current formula on the university's own admission notice.

UET Lahore was established in 1921 and NUST in 1991, according to Maqsad's UET vs NUST guide. GIKI was founded in 1993 and, according to Parhlai, hostel accommodation is mandatory for most of its students. FAST-NUCES is the only one of the four with campuses in six cities.

How Each Merit Formula Treats You

Every university converts Matric, FSc and its entry test into one weighted percentage, but the weights are very different. That is the real difference between these four for an applicant: not the brand, but which of your results the formula rewards most.

Where the weight sits

UET (ECAT)
17 / 50 / 33
NUST
10 / 15 / 75
FAST (CS)
10 / 40 / 50
FAST (Eng.)
17 / 50 / 33
GIKI

MatricFSc (GIKI: academic record)Entry test

FAST uses one formula for Computing and Business programs and another for Engineering. GIKI's 15% is the academic record (SSC and HSSC Part I) as one component.

What an extra 10% is worth

Here is how many aggregate points you gain if one result improves by 10 percentage points. It shows what to prioritise.

Formula+10% in Matric+10% in FSc+10% in the test
UET (ECAT) and FAST Engineering+1.7+5.0+3.3
NUST (NET)+1.0+1.5+7.5
FAST Computing and Business+1.0+4.0+5.0
GIKIUp to +1.5 (academic record)+8.5

Two students, four formulas

Take two students. Student A has strong boards (Matric 95%, FSc 92%) but an average test (60%). Student B has average boards (Matric 80%, FSc 78%) but a strong test (80%).

FormulaStudent A (strong boards)Student B (strong test)Favours
UET (ECAT)81.95%79.00%Student A
FAST Computing76.30%79.20%Student B
NUST68.30%79.70%Student B, by a wide margin
GIKI64.80%79.70%Student B, by a wide margin

For GIKI we used the FSc percentage as the academic figure, since our calculator treats the 15% as one component. These are illustrations, not predictions.

Do not compare aggregates across universities. A 79% at NUST and a 79% at UET are not the same thing, because each university ranks only its own applicants on its own test. What this table tells you is which formula suits your profile: if your boards are your strength, UET and FAST Engineering reward them most; if your test is your strength, NUST and GIKI reward it most.

Run your own marks through the calculators: UET (ECAT), NUST NET, FAST and GIKI.

The Four Entry Tests Compared

Because the tests differ, preparing for one does not automatically prepare you for the others. This is what each test looks like, based on our calculator pages.

What this means for your preparation

  • ECAT does not travel. FAST does not accept ECAT, and GIKI and NUST run their own tests. A strong ECAT result only helps at UET and other Punjab engineering institutions.
  • FAST gives you options. You can sit the NU Test, or use an NTS NAT score or a qualifying SAT score (minimum 1200 for CS and Engineering programs). FAST ranks each test type in its own merit list.
  • NUST gives you more than one try. NET runs in four series, each needing its own registration. The 2027 Series 1 registration window runs from 4 October to 14 November 2026, per NUST's tentative schedule.
  • Negative marking changes your strategy. At UET you can guess freely, at FAST each wrong answer costs 0.25, and at GIKI a wrong answer in Maths or Physics costs a full mark.

Our NTS guide explains the NAT option that FAST accepts.

Campuses, Programs and Costs

Once your formula and test are clear, the next filters are what you can study, where, and what it costs. Here is what we can verify for each university.

PublicUET Lahore and UET TaxilaEngineering and Computer Science programs, including Software Engineering, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical at UET Lahore. UET Lahore also has affiliated campuses with separate merit lists. ECAT is mandatory for engineering admissions at UET Lahore, UET Taxila and other Punjab institutions under PEC's directive.
Public (federal)NUSTA broad university: engineering, computing, business, architecture, social sciences and health. Programs on our NUST page include Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil and Chemical Engineering, plus AI, Computer Science and Data Science. Merit is by position, not a published percentage.
PrivateFAST-NUCESComputing first: Computer Science, Software Engineering, AI and Data Science, plus BBA, Accounting and Finance, and Electrical, Computer and Civil Engineering. Six campuses (Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, Chiniot-Faisalabad and Multan), each with its own seats and merit lists.
PrivateGIKIEngineering and computing only, on a residential campus in Topi. According to Parhlai, programs include Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical and Mechatronics Engineering, AI, Data Science and Cyber Security.

Fees: what we can and cannot tell you

As a rule, the public universities (UET and NUST) cost far less than the private ones (FAST and GIKI). Beyond that, we do not quote exact fee figures, because the numbers on third-party pages disagree with each other. Even within a single prep site, one page puts NUST's SEECS at roughly Rs 35,000 to 40,000 a semester while another page lists it at Rs 275,000. Fees also change every year and differ by program and campus.

Check each university's official fee schedule before you plan your budget. For GIKI, our page lists an application fee of Rs 3,000 for a single test, or Rs 4,500 if you apply for both the Engineering/Computing test and the Management Sciences test. Parhlai also reports that NUST and GIKI both offer need-based and merit scholarships.

Rankings: read them carefully

Guides often describe NUST as the top-ranked engineering university, UET as respected for traditional engineering, and FAST as a leading choice for computer science, but rankings vary by organisation and subject. Treat any single list as one opinion and check the current HEC and international tables for your program instead.

How to Choose: UET, NUST, FAST or GIKI?

Work through these questions in order. They narrow the four down faster than any ranking.

  1. Which result is your strongest? If your Matric and FSc are strong and your test is only average, the formulas of UET and FAST Engineering (50% FSc) suit you. If you can score high on a test, NUST (75%) and GIKI (85%) reward that.
  2. Which field do you want? For traditional engineering, UET, NUST and GIKI all offer it. For computer science, software, AI or data science, FAST is built around computing, and NUST and GIKI also offer those programs.
  3. What can your family afford? The public universities (UET and NUST) cost much less than the private ones. Check official fee schedules and scholarship options for FAST and GIKI before you rule them in or out.
  4. Where can you study? GIKI is residential and rural. FAST has six campuses in major cities. NUST is in Islamabad and UET in Lahore and Taxila. Your family's location and your comfort with hostel life matter more than most students expect.
  5. Can you sit several tests? The tests are different, so sitting more than one means preparing for each, and each has its own registration and fee. Many students shortlist two or three and prepare for those.

Quick picks

Choose UET ifYour FSc and Matric are strong, you want a public university in Punjab, and you are comfortable with an ECAT-style test with no negative marking.
Choose NUST ifYou can perform well on a single big test, want a broad public university with many engineering and computing programs, and can use its multiple NET series.
Choose FAST ifYour priority is computing, you want a choice of cities, and you want the option of NU Test, NAT or SAT.
Choose GIKI ifYou are certain about engineering or computing, are strong in Maths and Physics, and want an immersive residential campus and can manage the cost.

These are not either-or choices. Many applicants apply to several and decide once merit lists arrive. None of the four publishes an official closing-merit percentage table that we could verify, so use your calculated aggregate as a guide and confirm your position on the official lists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better: UET, NUST, FAST or GIKI?
There is no single best. UET and NUST are public universities, FAST and GIKI are private, and their merit formulas reward different strengths. UET and FAST Engineering give FSc 50% of the weight, NUST gives 75% to the NET, and GIKI gives 85% to its own test. Pick the one whose formula, test, program and cost fit you.
What is the difference between UET and NUST?
UET (Lahore and Taxila) uses ECAT and the formula 17% Matric + 50% FSc + 33% ECAT. NUST uses its own NET and the formula 10% Matric + 15% FSc + 75% NET. UET rewards strong board marks more, while NUST rewards a strong test score far more.
NUST vs FAST: which is better for computer science?
Both offer computer science. FAST is a private university focused on computing with six campuses, and its Computing formula is 10% Matric + 40% FSc + 50% entry test. NUST is a broader public university with a 10/15/75 formula. Rankings vary by organisation, so compare programs, campus and cost for your own situation.
NUST vs GIKI: which should I choose?
NUST is a public university in Islamabad with a wide range of programs and a 10/15/75 formula. GIKI is a private, fully residential university in Topi that focuses on engineering and computing, with an 85% test and 15% academic record formula. Cost, location and campus style are the main differences.
GIKI vs FAST: what is the difference?
GIKI is a residential engineering and computing university with its own 80-question test and an 85/15 formula. FAST is a computing-focused private university with six city campuses, accepts the NU Test, NTS NAT or SAT, and uses 10/40/50 for Computing and 17/50/33 for Engineering.
Does FAST accept ECAT scores?
No. FAST does not accept ECAT. You need the NU Test, an NTS NAT score, or a qualifying SAT score.
What are the merit formulas of UET, NUST, FAST and GIKI?
UET (ECAT): 17% Matric + 50% FSc + 33% ECAT. NUST: 10% Matric + 15% FSc + 75% NET. FAST: 10% Matric + 40% FSc + 50% test for Computing and Business, and 17% + 50% + 33% for Engineering. GIKI: 85% admission test + 15% academic record.
Which university gives the most weight to the entry test?
GIKI gives the most weight to the test at 85%, followed by NUST at 75%, FAST Computing at 50%, and UET and FAST Engineering at 33%.
Which university is best if my FSc marks are strong but my test score is average?
UET and FAST Engineering put 50% of the weight on FSc, and FAST Computing puts 40%, so strong board marks help most there. At NUST and GIKI the test dominates, so an average test score hurts more.
How many entry tests will I need to sit?
One for each university you apply to, unless FAST accepts a score you already hold. ECAT is for UET and other Punjab institutions, NET is for NUST, GIKI has its own test, and FAST accepts the NU Test, NTS NAT or SAT. FAST does not accept ECAT.
Is there negative marking in these tests?
ECAT has none. The FAST NU Test deducts 0.25 for each wrong answer. GIKI deducts 1 mark for a wrong answer in Mathematics and Physics only. Check NUST's official test notice for NET rules.
How much do UET, NUST, FAST and GIKI cost?
Public universities (UET and NUST) cost much less than private ones (FAST and GIKI), but fees change every year and differ by program and campus, and third-party pages disagree on exact figures. Check each university's official fee schedule. GIKI's application fee is Rs 3,000 for a single test or Rs 4,500 for both tests.
What is the closing merit of UET, NUST, FAST or GIKI?
None of these universities publishes an official closing-merit percentage table that we could verify. Closing merit changes every year with applicants and seats, so use your calculated aggregate as a guide and confirm your position on the official merit lists.
Can O-Level and A-Level students apply?
Yes. You need an IBCC equivalence certificate to convert your grades into Matric and FSc marks, then enter the equivalent marks in the calculators. NUST uses a separate sub-formula for final-year A-Level students: 25% O-Level equivalence plus 75% NET.

Final Thoughts

UET, NUST, FAST and GIKI are all strong options, and none is the right answer for every student. The sensible way to choose is to start with the part of the application you can still change, usually the entry test, look at which formula rewards your strengths, and then filter by program, location and budget.

Work out your aggregate for each shortlisted university, read each official admission notice for the current dates, fees and seat rules, and apply to more than one. Tests, fees and deadlines change every year, so confirm everything with the university before you pay or register.

Know your numbers before you decide.
