A merit formula (also called an aggregate formula) is the rule a university uses to turn your Matric marks, FSc marks and entry test score into one percentage. Each part is converted to a percentage, multiplied by its weight and added up. That is how aggregate is calculated everywhere; only the weights change.

The weights are why the same marks give different results at different universities. A student with strong boards and an average test gains from ECAT's 17/50/33 split, while the same student loses ground under NUST's 10/15/75. This page puts the university merit formulas of Pakistan for 2026 in one place, so you can compare MDCAT vs ECAT vs NUST aggregate rules, see which university gives more weight to the entry test, and judge FSc vs entry test for your own profile.

Every formula below was checked against our own calculator pages on 17-18 Oct 2026. We leave out closing merit figures because we could not verify official numbers for most of these universities.

Bars are percentages of the aggregate. Each bar adds up to 100. Grey is used where the university combines Matric and FSc into one academic record (GIKI 15%, PU 5th semester 100%). PU BS is shown at about 15 / 60 / 25.

The four formula families

(a) The 10/40/50 family 10/40/50

MDCAT, NUMS, UET Peshawar Engineering, FAST Computing and Business, and COMSATS all use 10% Matric, 40% FSc and 50% test. Your boards together (Matric + FSc) count the same as the test.

KMU CAT and Air University Engineering flip the last two numbers to 10/50/40, so FSc counts more than the test there. Do not mix the two.

(b) The 17/50/33 family 17/50/33

ECAT (UET Lahore, Taxila and other Punjab engineering institutions) and FAST Engineering give FSc half of the aggregate, the test one third, and Matric a larger 17%. This is the most board-friendly engineering formula in the table apart from PU BSc Engineering.

(c) Test-heavy formulas 75 / 70 / 85

NUST gives the NET 75%, NUTECH gives the NUET 70%, and GIKI gives its admission test 85% with only 15% for the academic record. At these universities a strong test can make up for average boards, and a weak test is hard to recover from.

GIKI also uses negative marking in Maths and Physics (+3/-1), so accuracy matters as much as speed.

(d) Formulas that ignore Matric or work differently Other

NED uses no Matric: 40% HSC Part-I and 60% entry test. PU BSc Engineering is 67% FSc and 33% test. PU BS programs weight Matric at one quarter inside an academic record worth 75%. UET Peshawar Computer Science and Data Science has no test at all (40% Matric, 60% FSc). Air University non-engineering programs use their own 15/35/50 split.

What an extra 10 points is worth

If one component rises by 10 percentage points and the others stay the same, this is how many aggregate points you gain. It shows where extra effort pays off most under each formula.

Student A comes out ahead in 7 of 17 formulas, Student B in 10. The biggest lead for Student A is under UET Peshawar (CS/DS) (14.4 points). The biggest lead for Student B is under GIKI (14.9 points).

Assumptions.

Test % means the percentage of that test's total marks. GIKI: FSc is used as the academic figure. NED: FSc is used as HSC Part-I. PU BS: academic % = (1/4 Matric + FSc) / (1/4 Matric total + FSc total) with both totals at 1100 (A = 92.6%, B = 78.4%), no bonus marks. UET Peshawar CS/DS has no test, so the test score is ignored. PU 5th semester is left out because it has no entry test. Minimum eligibility rules are not applied.

Do not compare aggregates across universities. Each university ranks its own applicants on its own test, so a 78% at one university says nothing about a 78% at another. The point of this table is which formula suits your profile: strong boards gain under board-heavy formulas, a strong test gains under test-heavy ones.

O-Level and A-Level students

IBCC equivalence converts O-Level to SSC and A-Level to HSSC. Our scale is A*=90, A=85, B=75, C=65, D=55, E=45, and the combined formula is ((O total + A total) / (subjects x 100)) x 1100. Enter the equivalence marks in the Matric and FSc fields of any calculator. NUST has a separate rule for final-year A-Level students: 25% O-Level equivalence + 75% NET.

Frequently asked questions

What is a merit formula?

A merit formula is the rule a university uses to turn your Matric, FSc and entry test results into one aggregate percentage. Each result is converted to a percentage, multiplied by its weight and added up. The university then uses that number to rank applicants.

How is aggregate calculated?

Convert each result to a percentage, multiply it by its weight, and add the parts. With the 10/40/50 formula: 0.10 x Matric % + 0.40 x FSc % + 0.50 x test %. Example: Matric 90%, FSc 85% and test 70% give 9 + 34 + 35 = 78%.

Which university gives more weight to the entry test?

Among the formulas compared here, GIKI gives the test the most weight (85%), then NUST (75%) and NUTECH (70%). Full ranking by test weight, highest first: 85%: GIKI; 75%: NUST; 70%: NUTECH; 60%: NED; 50%: Air University (non-Eng), COMSATS, FAST (Computing/Business), MDCAT, NUMS, UET Peshawar (Eng); 40%: Air University (Eng), KMU CAT; 33%: ECAT, FAST (Engineering), PU (BSc Engineering); 25%: PU (BS). UET Peshawar Computer Science and Data Science and PU BS 5th semester have no entry test.

Which universities ignore Matric marks?

NED uses no Matric marks: it is 40% HSC Part-I and 60% entry test. PU's BSc Engineering formula is 67% FSc and 33% entry test, so Matric carries no weight there either. Where Matric has its own weight it is about 10% to 17%, except UET Peshawar's Computer Science and Data Science formula, which gives it 40%.

FSc vs entry test: which matters more?

It depends on the formula. FSc counts more than the test in ECAT (50% vs 33%), KMU CAT (50% vs 40%), Air University Engineering (50% vs 40%) and PU BSc Engineering (67% vs 33%). The test counts more in MDCAT (50% vs 40%), NUST (75% vs 15%), NUTECH (70% vs 20%) and GIKI (85% vs 15%). The what-an-extra-10-points table on this page shows the exact gain for each formula.

MDCAT vs ECAT vs NUST aggregate: what is the difference?

MDCAT is 10% Matric + 40% FSc + 50% test out of 180. ECAT is 17% Matric + 50% FSc + 33% test out of 400. NUST is 10% Matric + 15% FSc + 75% NET out of 200. An extra 10 percentage points in the test adds 5.0 aggregate points in MDCAT, 3.3 in ECAT and 7.5 in NUST. Some websites quote NUST as 50% NET + 40% HSSC + 10% Matric, which does not match our calculator's 10/15/75, so confirm with the official NUST notice.

Is the NUMS formula the same as MDCAT?

The weights are the same (10% Matric + 40% FSc + 50% test), but NUMS is a separate test and a separate admission. The NUMS Entry Test is out of 200: Paper I has 150 academic MCQs and Paper II has 50 psychological MCQs. It is paper-based with no negative marking. Minimums are 55% for MBBS and 50% for BDS. Some websites wrongly use 50% FSc + 50% test with no Matric.

Is the KMU CAT formula the same as MDCAT?

No. KMU CAT is 10% Matric + 50% FSc + 40% KMU CAT score (out of 100), while MDCAT is 10% Matric + 40% FSc + 50% test. Our KMU CAT page covers BS Allied Health Sciences at KMU's constituent institutes in Peshawar. The KMU Islamabad campus has its own admission portal and we have not confirmed its formula.

Can I compare my aggregate across universities?

No. Each university ranks its own applicants on its own test, so a 78% aggregate at one university says nothing about a 78% at another. Use the formulas to see which weighting suits your marks, then check each university's own merit position.

Is the FAST formula the same for every program?

No. FAST Computing and Business programs use 10% Matric + 40% FSc + 50% test. Engineering programs use 17% Matric + 50% FSc + 33% test. The test can be the NU Test, NTS NAT or SAT (minimum 1200 for CS and Engineering). ECAT is not accepted at FAST.

How does Punjab University calculate merit?

For PU BS programs (regulations 2026-27) merit is 75% academic record + 25% PU entry test. Academic % = (1/4 Matric + FSc + additional marks) / (1/4 Matric total + FSc total) x 100, which works out to roughly 15% Matric, 60% FSc and 25% test. BSc Engineering uses 67% FSc + 33% entry test and needs at least 60% in intermediate. Hafiz-e-Quran gets +20 marks and each late year costs 2 marks (maximum 5).

What is the Air University merit formula?

Engineering programs use 10% SSC + 50% HSSC + 40% entry test. Non-engineering programs (computing, BBA, social sciences) use 15% SSC + 35% HSSC + 50% entry test. Engineering needs 60% in HSSC and at least 33% in the test. Some websites wrongly list 10/40/50 for Air University.

What if my FSc Part-2 result is not out yet?

It depends on the university. NUST uses FSc Part-1 marks. FAST and COMSATS use Matric 50% + test 50%. NED uses HSC Part-I only. NUTECH uses Part-I/A1. GIKI uses HSSC Part-I. PU gives provisional admission on Part-I. Always confirm in the admission notice for your year.

How do O-Level and A-Level students use these formulas?

Convert your grades to IBCC equivalence marks and enter them in the Matric and FSc fields. IBCC converts O-Level to SSC and A-Level to HSSC. Our equivalence calculator uses the scale A*=90, A=85, B=75, C=65, D=55, E=45 and the combined formula ((O total + A total) / (subjects x 100)) x 1100.
